3 Things to Try Before Calling a Technician

Power-cycle

Turn the heater off, then the circuit breaker. Wait 5 minutes and restore power. On UltraTemp heat pumps, FIVE ALARMS also clears with the ON/OFF button.

Check water flow

Most UltraTemp alarms (LOW WATER FLOW, HIGH REFRIG) and gas heater codes like ERR PS are caused by low water flow, not a broken part. Confirm the pump is on, the filter is clean, all valves are open, and the bypass is closed.

Check outside temp

Heat pumps slow down or stop below about 50°F. LOW REFRIG and LOW AMBIENT TEMP can show up in cold weather. If they keep showing once it warms up, call us.

Most Common Pentair Error Codes

These alarms cover most Pentair service calls. UltraTemp heat pumps show words (like LOW WATER FLOW); gas heaters show short codes (like ERR IGN). Don’t see yours? Find it by model below.

Pentair LOW WATER FLOW Alarm: Low or No Water Flow (UltraTemp, ERR PS on gas heaters)

LOW WATER FLOW means the heat pump’s water pressure switch has opened. It isn’t sensing enough water moving through the unit, so it shuts off to protect the compressor. On MasterTemp, Max-E-Therm and ETi gas heaters, the same problem shows as ERR PS (or PS).

Make sure the pool pump is on (check the timer).
Make sure the filter is clean and the lint trap is clear.
Make sure all valves are open and the bypass around the heater is closed.

If LOW WATER FLOW stays on with the pump running and a clean filter, the water pressure switch may have failed.

Pentair HIGH REFRIG Alarm: High Refrigerant Pressure (UltraTemp)

HIGH REFRIG means the refrigerant high pressure switch has opened. The most common cause is low water flow. Less often it’s a stuck expansion valve (TXV), too much refrigerant, a tripped compressor thermal protector, or a failed switch.

Make sure the pool pump is on (check the timer).
Make sure the filter is clean and the lint trap is clear.
Make sure all valves are open and the bypass around the heater is closed.

If HIGH REFRIG keeps tripping with good flow, have it checked soon. Running at high pressure strains the compressor.

Pentair LOW REFRIG Alarm: Low Refrigerant Pressure (UltraTemp)

LOW REFRIG means the refrigerant low pressure switch has opened. Common causes are a refrigerant leak, air or water that’s too cold, a faulty fan or capacitor, blocked airflow, or a stuck expansion valve.

Clear leaves, shrubs and debris from around the coil.
Check that the fan on top is spinning when the heat pump runs.
Check the outside temperature.

If LOW REFRIG shows up on a warm day or keeps coming back, it’s often a refrigerant leak. Only an EPA 608 certified tech can test and recharge refrigerant, and our techs are certified.

Pentair LOW AMBIENT TEMP Alarm: Too Cold to Run (UltraTemp)

LOW AMBIENT TEMP means the air is too cold for the heat pump to run, or a defrost cycle didn’t finish in time. The heat pump waits for the ice on the coil to melt or for the air to warm up.

If it shows on mild days, the defrost (suction) sensor may be failing.

Pentair Sensor Alarms (WATER THERM, SUCTION TH, E01, 126, E05, E06)

These mean the control board isn’t getting a good reading from a sensor.

UltraTemp: WATER THERM SHORT/OPEN is the water temperature sensor. SUCTION TH SHORT/OPEN is the defrost sensor.
Gas heaters: E01 and 126 are the water temperature sensor. E05 and E06 are the stack flue (exhaust) sensor.

The sensor or its wiring usually needs to be tested and replaced. On UltraTemp heat pumps, that’s a quick repair for our techs.

Pentair FIVE ALARMS and BROWNOUT (UltraTemp)

FIVE ALARMS means 5 faults happened within 1 hour, so the heat pump locked itself out. It clears after an hour, or with the ON/OFF button. Check the alarm history to see which alarm caused it.

BROWNOUT means the 24-volt supply to the control board is low, usually from a failing transformer or low supply voltage to the heat pump. That’s high-voltage electrical work, so leave it to a tech.

If FIVE ALARMS comes back after you clear it, turn the heat pump off and call.

Pentair MasterTemp ERR IGN and Other Gas Heater Codes

ERR IGN means the gas heater tried to light and couldn’t. Check that the gas supply is on. Other common MasterTemp, Max-E-Therm and ETi codes include ERR AFS (air flow), ERR HLS (high limit), ERR AGS (automatic gas shutoff) and ERR SFS (exhaust too hot). If one of these keeps coming back, it needs a licensed gas technician. Medallion doesn’t repair gas heaters. How to Reset a Pentair Pool Heater

UltraTemp heat pumps: FIVE ALARMS clears with the ON/OFF button (or on its own after an hour). For other alarms:

Turn the heat pump off at its control panel.
Switch off the breaker.
Wait 5 minutes.
Turn the breaker back on, then the heat pump.

Gas heaters (MasterTemp, Max-E-Therm, ETi): ERR IGN and E01 clear with the HEATER OFF button. ERR AGS, ERR SFS and E06 lock the keypad and clear by cycling power.

If the code comes back after a reset, the reset cleared the message but not the cause. Schedule a repair or call 407-786-0000.

I had the temperature sensor on my electric heater fail and I worked with tech support (Nikki) who did an excellent job assisting me in clearing a code to get the heater running despite the failing sensor and said she would ship out a new temp sensor with complete instructions to accomplish the repair (if I felt comfortable doing it) or send a repair technician. What does LOW WATER FLOW mean on a Pentair UltraTemp?

The heat pump’s water pressure switch has opened because not enough water is flowing through it. Make sure the pump is on, the filter and lint trap are clean, all valves are open, and the bypass is closed. If it stays on with good flow, the pressure switch may have failed. Schedule a repair or call 407-786-0000.

What does HIGH REFRIG mean on a Pentair heat pump?

The refrigerant high pressure switch has opened. It’s usually low water flow. If HIGH REFRIG keeps tripping with good flow, it can be a stuck expansion valve, too much refrigerant, or a failed switch, and running it that way strains the compressor. Schedule a repair or call 407-786-0000.

What does LOW REFRIG mean on a Pentair UltraTemp?

The refrigerant low pressure switch has opened. In cold weather it can just mean it’s too cold to run. On a warm day, it’s often a refrigerant leak, which only an EPA 608 certified tech can repair. Schedule a repair or call 407-786-0000.

What does FIVE ALARMS mean on a Pentair heat pump?

Five faults happened within one hour, so the heat pump locked itself out. Press ON/OFF to clear it, then check the alarm history for the alarm that caused it. If it locks out again, turn the heat pump off and call. Schedule a repair or call 407-786-0000.

Where is the reset button on a Pentair pool heater?

There isn’t a separate reset button. On UltraTemp heat pumps, the ON/OFF button clears FIVE ALARMS; for other alarms, turn the unit off, switch off the breaker for 5 minutes, then turn it back on. On MasterTemp and other Pentair gas heaters, the HEATER OFF button clears ERR IGN and E01, and some codes clear only by cycling power.

What does ERR IGN mean on a Pentair MasterTemp?

ERR IGN means the ignition control module couldn’t light the heater. Check that the gas supply is on, then press HEATER OFF to clear it. If it keeps coming back, it usually points to a failing igniter or flame sensor, which needs a licensed gas technician. Medallion doesn’t repair gas heaters. Do you repair Pentair gas heaters?
